Ahhhh my Oakland Raiders. I’ve been a lifelong fan Raider and that only hurts me to witness what their favorite team has become. The Raiders finished 5-11 in 2008, leaving the Raider Nation, one year more headaches. I’ve written (and continue to write) several articles about the prospects Raiders as a team for 2009. For the sake of this article, however, I will be examining the Raiders only a fantasy possible. With this in mind we see the potential of the fantasy of Silver and Black for 2009.It is no secret that I’m not sold on JaMarcus Russell as an NFL quarterback and I’m even less affection, as a fantasy QB . To be frank, Russell has shown me and other members of the Raider Nation very little in their 3 years in the league. Obviously, he has a cannon arm, but it takes much more than that to be a successful quarterback in the NFL just ask Jeff George. In addition, Russell has not shown much of a work ethic since the Raiders spent most of his franchise with him 3 years ago. In fact, I wanted and still want the Raiders had drafted Brady Quinn Quinn rather than Russell as I think has all the tools to be a very good quarterback in this league for a long time if the Browns ever give the opportunity. I do not see Russell and, apparently, the Raiders are getting concerned as well or that have not signed free agent Jeff Garcia quarterback “backup” of Russell. I have news for you guys. If Russell begins slowly, which is a real possibility and even though the Raiders have an absolutely brutal schedule this year Garcia will be there. Until underneathth Russell shows some fire in your ass does not go anywhere near him on draft day, even this August as a number of 2 QB.As down as I am who I am that the top of the Russell Raiders running game and in my opinion, if the Raiders hit the ball all year round using the three-headed monster they currently have in the list I truly believe this team can go 8-8. First, Darren McFadden will start this year to the tune of 1100-1300 total yards and 12 TD. Count on it. Why am I so sure? A couple of different reasons. First, Dmac is too good. His rookie season was derailed in large part to an injury to the stubborn turf toe that bothered him for most of the year. Make no mistake about it. In terms of pure talent McFadden is better than Chris Johnson, Matt Forte and Steve Slaton. Moreover, Dmac has been proactive in respect of the aforementioned foot injury instead of having the coach of the Raiders a steel plate in the shoe to help prevent such injuries from happening again. Finally, the specialist striker Lorenzo Neal has been brought in specifically to block the Raiders and McFadden to help launch his career. McFadden is the real deal. Develop it between 3 to 5 ° round as a 2-RB and see also explode. In McFadden of the Raiders also sports two fine backs in Justin Fargas and Michael Bush. If I am a betting man I’m thinking that Fargas will be the odd man out this year. If McFadden is heated from the beginning that I think Fargas will not be seeing the field more. Bush, however, have a role regardless. The nation saw exactly what Bush is capable of a runner in the week 17 final against the Buccaneers when he ran for 177 yards and 2 TD in a game that Tampa needed to win to make the playoffs and head coach in Tampa last instance, the cost and former Raider coach Jon Gruden his job. Had it not been for the broken leg he suffered in Louisville Bush would certainly have been one of the ten selection and absolutely stole the Raiders in the 4th round a few years ago. Bush no doubt continue to see work this year as a short yardage / goal line back and not be afraid to take a picture of him with a pick in rounds 12 and later. As for Fargas, I personally would not lose an election over it, because unless McFadden gets hurt this year I do not see any numbers to worthwhile statistically.Unlike Raiders running attack team’s receiving corps is clouded by controversy and question marks. Al Davis and I was shocked the world when selecting WR Darrius Heyward-Bey over Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin. It is obvious to me and everyone else that really the only variable that matters when evaluating players Mr. Davis is the running time of 40 yards. Do not go into Davis here, as format is not appropriate because it is an article about a fantasy Raiders just one possibility. Heyward-Bey Does have any fantasy potential for 2009? Yes I wish I fool him? Yes, but not before the round of 13 and 14 and if someone like Maclin or Percy Harvin is still on the table I would take either ahead of Heyward-Bey. However, from a viewpoint of fantasy Heyward-Bey, has some things working for him. First, already the No. 1 receiver on the team and Mr. Davis has made his intentions perfectly clear that it intends to try to get a pass deep right from the get go fast. If you are in a league like mine, that you are rewarded with bonus points for long distances and TD receptions than it’s worth a shot to take a flyer around late on Heyward-Bey, because the law of the averages says he will reach at least a few bombs from Russell this year. Another receiver that could see an increase in production if Russell develops the way the franchise has it that Johnny Lee Higgins is. Higgins is a good talent, both in the WR position and as a punt returner / kick. Like Heyward-Bey Higgins take a picture of late and if Russell can finally get your head out of his ass you may see some dividends from it as the year progresses. Chad shillings and rookie Louis Murphy of Florida Raider receivers are 2 others to keep an eye on Zach Miller fall.TE this could be the biggest beneficiary if Russell is making progress. Miller began to realize a name for himself last year by catching 56 passes for 778 yards and a TD 1. Both receptions and yards receiving led the Raiders by a mile, and although the disappointing Miller TD 1 is sure to improve on it in 2009. Miller, along with Greg Olson of Chicago are my 2 Dark Horse TE candidates for next season. Olson has the best quarterback, but Russell and Miller appeared to form a good chemistry last year and if that continues Miller has the talent to be an elite NFL Raiders TE.The daylight saving is to be avoided at all costs until the unit proved otherwise. Last year the number 31 team against the run and hit the ground throughout the year. The DL was a complete disaster and LB Tommy Kelly, who normally anchor down the unit had a year off. The secondary is led by one of the corners, if not better coverage in the game with Nnamdi Asomugha, who has just signed a contract extension this offseason. Asomugha is the modern day Lester Hayes and is truly one of the best in the position of CB in the NFL. The bottom line however is that it goes without saying that there are much better options in the DST position of the Raiders and should not be considered in any circumstances in any format. In leagues where kickers are rewarded with bonus points for more than 50 meters kicker Sebastian Janikowski FG may be of some value because you still have the same leg that was out of FSU.To conclude my examination of the Raiders I recommend taking a long, hard look at McFadden as the # 2 RB for 2009. I’m telling you now that will have a great year and I like the Miller TE. As for the Raiders other there is nothing really to get excited about a possible fantasy. Next: The Kansas City Chiefs.
